The House of Earthen Calm

Most unbuilt work stops at an image. This was carried to construction level, every junction, section and service run settled.

Stabilised rammed earth carries the load and the thermal strategy at once, specified in visible lifts to be laid by masons trained on site, and sized to do the work a Delhi summer demands without mechanical help. The convention it challenges is that earth is a rustic material for rural sites.

In plan, curved masonry removes almost every corner and guides movement through a domestic landscape that feels grown rather than assembled. Brick vaults keep the roof light where the walls are heavy. Two courtyards, large glazing and retractable skylights answer the one condition a deep, narrow plot always imposes: a dark, airless centre.

A ground-floor master suite and a lift at the core were fixed at concept stage, for owners who asked for a house they could grow old in. Sage-green cabinetry and natural timber were chosen to recede; nothing was meant to be the first thing noticed.

The house was never built. Everything below is a visualisation taken from the construction model, and is shown as that.

A deep, narrow plot in a dense Noida sector. The earth wall meets the street and carries the whole thermal argument.
